When we received the diagnosis of congestive heart failure on our 12 year old Boston Terrier, Zidane, we decided that when the time came we were going to use an in-home service to help him pass, if we had to make the choice. Well two years later that awful day came, and the decision was made. We got Dr. Fixler’s card from our vet’s office and every single interaction I had from my first phone call to the dreaded but very needed visit was nothing less than phenomenal. Obviously the service they provide isn’t something people are excited to do, but it’s a very necessary service. Grace and Dr. Fixler were so wonderful on the day, they explained the process and what would happen, so that we didn’t worry that he suffered at all. He even explained to us that he wanted to administer the final shot as quickly as possible after the sedation took effect due to Zi’s heart condition. He didn’t want to risk anything happen that could cause him to suffer. They took a piece of my heart out of my front gate that morning, and it really does take a special kind of soul to do the job they do. Thank you both for all that you do.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Years later, it came time to euthanize Hansel, my beloved family cat and friend, who at the age of 18 was stricken with kidney failure. End stage kidney failure is like being lost in the desert without water. I was not going to let him suffer. I decided to perform his euthanasia at home — he did not have to be forced into a cat carrier, his heart did not race at the sight of a hospital, he simply went to sleep on his bed as he always did. I decided that if I can do this for my own pets, why can’t I do it for others?
