Vaccination
Immunizations ares essential for kittens as maternal antibodies only provide protection against a number of fatal disease for a limited period. Our staff will explain your pet’s overall risk, and whenever possible we adhere to the guidelines set forth by the American Animal Hospital Association’s protocol for vaccination of dogs and cats.
Behavioral Counseling
It is quite possible that behavioral problems have been the demise of more puppies and kittens in the United States than infectious disease. It is for this reason that we will discuss home training, and socialization. The period of socialization is relatively brief and it is imperative that we seize this opportunity to make a positive impact on the life of each young patient. Our staff will help you to identify problem areas early on, and more importantly prevent them in the first place.
Nutritional Counseling
Nutrition is extremely important and nutritional counseling will be made based on your animal’s body condition and environmental demands. The first year has specific demands on the body, and proper nutrition is vital to your kitten’s muscle, bone, joint, coat, organ, and teeth development. With each exam, we will track your kitten’s weight, growth, and response to current diet, so that we might assure that metabolic demands are being met.
Comprehensive Examination
An annual physical examination is just as important for your dog or cat as it is for you. The veterinarians at Christensen Animal Hospital recommends a complete physical examination for your pet at least once a year and encourage exams every 6 months.
Many debilitating diseases are easily prevented with relatively inexpensive medications that generally carry a high margin of safety. During examination our staff at Christensen Animal Hospital in Wilmette will discuss prevention of external and internal parasites with you and recommendations for control will be made based on your pet’s lifestyle. This is an extremely important aspect of preventative medicine as many parasites carrying disease are transmissible from our pets to us. For more information call us today at 847-251-2600.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Is your pet itching, scratching or experiencing recurrent ear infections? Allergies, skin problems and excessive scratching can make your pet miserable. Allergies in dogs and cats are treatable conditions that often show up as skin or ear problems. We will work closely with you to diagnose, treat and monitor any skin, ear, nail or pad probl
Other common uses of scopes at our hospital include evaluation of the ears to remove polyps, and other benign and malignant tumors, and to alleviate chronic middle ear infections. Our skilled surgical team at Christensen Animal Hospital in Wilmette often employs cystoscopy for the removal of bladder stones and the biopsy and/or resection of bladder tumors. Frequently we pass a very small, flexible, diode laser through the endoscope to remove and destroy various tumors with exceptional results in these patients. For more information call us today at 847-251-2600.
Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
Behavioral problems are consistently cited among the top reasons that cats and dogs are relinquished or euthanized. Many animals will display changes in behavior secondary to medical problems. For example, inappropriate urination in a companion animal may be due to a urinary tract infection, bladder stones or tumors, stress, systemic imbalances, and other medical problems.

Heart Disease Treatment
Pets, just like humans, get heart disease or have heart conditions such as a heart murmur. We will recommend a cardiac referral evaluation if your dog or cat is exhibiting symptoms of cardiac disease. A cardiac exam will give us much needed information regarding your pet’s heart condition. Symptoms of cardiac issues in dogs and cats can include...
Kidney Disease Treatment
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Recent studies indicate that more than 75% of all dogs and cats develop some level of tooth and gum disease by the age of three years old. The bulk of this disease is present in the form of periodontal disease, an inflammatory condition that affects the soft and hard structures that support the teeth. The early stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis begins when harmful plaque and calculus builds up on the teeth, much of which accumulates below the gumline. At this point, the gums become swollen and red due to inflammation, which is the body’s natural response to the presence of harmful bacteria. As the disease progresses, gums pull away from the tooth and supporting gum tissues are destroyed, a condition known as periodontitis. This leads to bone loss, tooth mobility and eventually, tooth loss.
Because we believe that oral health is integral to overall health, we have invested in a human-quality, high-grade, dental xray machine and cutting edge equipment. Our digital dental xray unit allows for real time definitive diagnosis and minimal xray exposure to your pet. Out doctors are highly skilled at a variety of oral surgeries, including the use of laser surgery when indicated which reduces bleeding, sensitivity, and post operative pain.
Veterinary Surgery
Christensen Animal Hospital offers clients a privately owned, affordable alternative to specialty surgical care and advanced diagnostic procedures.
Laser Surgery
At Christensen Animal Hospital in Wilmette, IL we use lasers to cut tissue whenever possible. A scalpel cuts with mechanical energy, and a laser cuts with light energy. There are a number of benefits associated with laser surgery because as the laser cuts, it also seals nerves and vessels. This leads to less bleeding, pain, and inflammation, which leads to faster recovery and return to normal function for your pet. It all goes back to our mantra at Christensen; to use the least invasive technique to allow the patient to get back to normal as soon as possible while enduring as little pain as possible.
Spaying and Neutering
Christensen Animal Hospital has a high-tech surgical suite and highly trained veterinarians to perform any surgery your pet may need. We are able to perform routine surgical procedures such as spay and neuter surgery, to more complex soft-tissue surgery such as foreign object removal.
If your pet requires any specialized testing, we have relationships with excellent independent laboratory services that are capable of accurately performing any specialized tests your pet may need.
X-Ray
Dental Radiology
Digital Dental Radiology. Digital dental radiography allows us to visualize the internal anatomy of your pet’s teeth along with the roots and surrounding bone. This allows us to diagnose bone loss or hidden disease that may be present in the tooth roots and jawbone areas that may not have been visible during our thorough oral exam prior to the dental procedure.
Microchipping
At Christensen Animal Hospital we strongly recommend microchipping every pet. If your pet was lost, he or she can be reunited with you if they are found. A microchip is your pet’s permanent ID and, in the event your pet is separated from you, it may be your only means of being reunited with him or her.
The Kennels at Christensen Animal Hospital in Wilmette offer safe, loving, veterinarian-supervised dog and cat boarding for the pets of Wilmette, Winnetka, Glenview and Kenilworth. Our professional, friendly boarding team will take great care of your pet.
Grooming
Christensen Animal Hospital is pleased to offer dog grooming. Good grooming is essential for maintaining your dog’s overall health and well-being. Regular grooming helps prevent common issues such as matting, skin irritations, and infections, which can be uncomfortable or even painful for your pet. It also provides an opportunity for us to check for any abnormalities, such as lumps, bumps, or parasites, that might require our attention. Beyond its health benefits, proper grooming enhances your dog’s appearance, making them look clean, tidy, and well-cared-for.
Senior Pet Care
Since our pets age faster than we do, we recommend bi-annual wellness visits for all of our pets. These twice a year visits become even more important in our senior animals. In older pets, 6 months can be the equivalent of 2 years in some cases. This is why it is important to monitor our senior pets on a more regular basis to make sure that we are catching even the smallest change. Prevention is the key to a long and healthy life in our pets, just like in humans. There are many common diseases in older pets that if treated early, can help them live longer lives.
