Greg Nikitas is a well-known and regarded defense attorney who was a felony trial attorney in the Lake County State's Attorney's Office where he prosecuted 12 First Degree Murder Trials. This courtroom was initially created in reaction to several domestic violence murder cases. At that time, Steven McCollum was the Chief Deputy State's Attorney for Lake County, Illinois. In that role, Steve was the Chairperson of the Domestic Violence Council and wrote the initial bylaws for police and prosecutors which determined how these cases would be handled in the Lake County Courts. Also in that role, Steve prosecuted many of the domestic First Degree Murder cases being prosecuted by the State's Attorney. When Steve entered private practice as a defense attorney, it was natural that this background and experience led to him defending many cases in the specialized courtroom.
Juvenile Crimes
There is nothing more difficult than having your child charged or investigated for the commission of a crime. Juvenile Law is an area with specialized rules and procedures. Many lawyers, even lawyers who handle adult criminal cases, don't have the necessary background and experience to successfully defend juvenile delinquency petitions. When a child under the age of 18 years old is charged with a felony (or under 17 years old on a misdemeanor offense), the court proceedings are controlled by the Illinois Juvenile Court Act
