Elizabeth “Lizzie” is a board-certified nurse practitioner specializing in Dermatology. She began her nursing career at Lutheran Hospital after graduating from the University of St. Francis. While working as a registered nurse at Fort Wayne Hospitals, she gained valuable experience on the med-surg floor, surgery, and family practice. She completed her Master’s in Nursing at the University of Saint Francis. Lizzie has three years of dermatology experience as a nurse practitioner before joining Fort Wayne Dermatology Consultants.
Emergency Care
The most common signs of hives are slightly raised pink or red swellings, welts that occur alone or in a group, and/or they hurt or itch. If your hives causes your lips and eyelids to swell, you must go to the emergency room (this is called angioedema).
Infectious Diseases
Dr. McGovern grew up in Escanaba in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and obtained a degree in biology from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. He proceeded to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where he completed medical school on a US Army scholarship. His transitional internship was performed at Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon (near Augusta), GA. He next served two years doing defensive biological warfare research (vaccine development) at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick (near Frederick), MD. His training resumed with a three-year dermatology residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora (Denver suburb), CO, and he finished his US Army obligation by running the dermatology clinic at Fort Riley (near Manhattan), KS for two years. Following an Honorable Discharge from the US Army, he moved to Connecticut where he completed a one year fellowship in Mohs and Advanced Dermatologic Surgery at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven. He has performed Mohs Surgery at Fort Wayne Dermatology Consultants since January 2000.

Sometimes the patient needs another type of biopsy. A type of surgery called a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) may be recommended to stage the melanoma. When melanoma spreads, it often goes to the closest lymph nodes first. A SLNB tells doctors whether the melanoma has spread to nearby lymph nodes. Other tests that a patient may need include x-rays, blood work, and a CT scan.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy cream: Cream that contains a chemotherapy drug, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), can be used to treat SCC in the earliest stage.
Radiation Therapy
When melanoma spreads, palliative care can help control the pain and other symptoms. Radiation therapy is a type of palliative care for stage IV (has spread) melanoma. It can ease pain and other symptoms.

Shiny pink or red, slightly scaly patch, especially on the trunk. It grows slowly and may be mistaken for a patch of eczema.
Fungus
Ringworm is a skin infection caused by fungus. The name “ringworm” probably comes from the rash that many people see. On the skin, the rash often has a ring-shaped pattern and a raised, scaly border that snakes its way around the edge like a worm. Ringworm is quite common, and you have already had it if you had athlete’s foot, jock itch or scalp ringworm. This skin condition can appear on just about any part of your body.

Eczema is a general term used to describe an inflammation of the skin. In fact, eczema is a series of chronic skin conditions that produce itchy rashes; scaly, dry, and leathery areas; skin redness; or inflammation around blisters. It can be located anywhere on the body, but most frequently appears in the creases on the face, arms, and legs. Itchiness is the key characteristic and symptom of eczema. When scratched, the lesions may begin to ooze and get crusted. Over time, painful cracks in the scaly, leathery tissue can form.

Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin condition that creates red patches of skin with white, flaky scales. It most commonly occurs on the elbows, knees, and trunk, but can appear anywhere on the body. The first episode usually strikes between the ages of 15 and 35. It is a chronic condition that will then cycle through flare-ups and remissions throughout the rest of the patient’s life. Psoriasis affects as many as 7.5 million people in the United States. About 20,000 children under age 10 have been diagnosed with psoriasis. This skin condition is genetic, but not contagious. Treatment for psoriasis does not cure it but aims to minimize the symptoms and speed up the healing process.
