Woodpeckers belong to the order Piciformes and the family Picidae, which also includes flickers and sapsuckers. Twenty-one species inhabit the United States. Woodpeckers have short legs with two sharp-clawed, backward-pointed toes and stiff tail feathers, which serve as a supportive prop. These physical traits enable them to cling easily to the trunks and branches of trees, wood siding, or utility poles while pecking. They have stout, sharply pointed beaks for pecking into wood and a specially developed long tongue that can be extended a considerable distance. The tongue is used to dislodge larvae or ants from their burrows in wood or bark.
Spiders
Sharks, snakes, spiders, lions, bears — all super dangerous to humans, right? Not nearly as dangerous as the common mosquito! As a matter of fact, mosquitos are the most deadly animal in the world. Since the beginning of time, the battle between man and mosquitos has left many casualties in its path — and we don’t mean mosquitos! While they might not be exactly taking over the planet, yet, mosquitos have been known to carry some of the deadliest diseases known to man. In the United States, the most common mosquito transmitted disease (currently) is the West Nile Virus.
Termites
Unfortunately, living in the south is not as maintenance free as some other parts of the country. We deal with crazy mosquito’s, giant roaches and thriving relentless termites. just as you would service your home HVAC system, treat the lawn for weeds, replace a busted mailbox post, controlling the pests around your property is part of responsible property maintenance. Some HOA’s even require a proper pest prevention plan to be in place in their bylaws.
Cockroaches
Unfortunately, in this area, it’s common that wasps, ants, roaches and termites will try to take over your home. Here at Crocodile Dave, we take great care of Brookhaven residents
Bees
Bumble bees and carpenter bees are often mistaken for each other, but they are actually very different. Bumble bees do not nest in tunnels hollowed out of wood or hover around trim boards or deck rails. Also unlike carpenter bees, bumble bees are Very Aggressive! The best way to tell the difference, is to look at the abdomen (rear end). the bumble bee has an obvious hairy abdomen, where the carpenter bees rear is shiny.
Wasps
Paper wasps typically build open coned nests such as these in covered areas such as roof eaves, overhangs, lamp posts, picnic tables barbeque grills and any small covered structure. However, they do enter homes through the breather space at the edge of the roofline. They also enter through bathroom, stove and dryer vents.

Hornets
The toxicity of hornet stings varies according to hornet species; some deliver just a typical insect sting, while others are among the most venomous known insects. Single hornet stings are not in themselves fatal, except sometimes to allergic victims. Multiple stings by non-European hornets may be fatal because of highly toxic species-specific components of their venom. The stings of the Asian Giant Hornet (Vespa mandarinia japonica) are the most venomous known.
Yellowjackets
They usually nest in the ground, but will nest also in railroad ties, wall voids, and other above ground locations. In the spring, most yellow jackets will feed on insects. Many homeowners see”bees” flying around their hedges. These “bees” are usually yellow jackets and are there to eat insects on the foliage. Spraying the hedges with an appropriate insecticide will kill the food source of the yellow jackets, and they will soon leave the area.
Slugs
ENTRY: Opossums will make use of any holes or weak points in your house. The best way to keep them out is to keep tree limbs away from your house and make sure there is no available food source around. They eat snails, slugs, spiders, roaches, mice and snakes, so having them around your yard can be beneficial.
With bats we use the same wire mesh in all openings. We will also remove any guano (bat droppings) if needed.
Moles
Like most homeowners, you are probably confused by all of the conflicting “advice” on mole control. You may believe that every rumor, home remedy, or control method is worth trying. In fact, many chemicals and home remedies (including castor oil derivatives and grub controls) are not only ineffective when dealing with moles, but they allow the animals time to establish and become real problems. Moles can quickly colonize and spread through adjacent residential properties if not handled properly. Because they need a well-established tunnel network to survive, control will be more difficult the longer they are allowed to tunnel and become habituated.
Raccoons
Raccoons are large, heavy animals that get into your trash and make big loud noises in your roof! A Raccoon needs a big hole to get inside your house, so their damage can be significant. Raccoons also have very sharp claws and teeth to help them with climbing and eating which makes them a big threat to humans and other animals.
Snakes
Almost nobody likes snakes, whether they are venomous or not. The truth is, some snakes are good. They keep down the rodent population and even eat the “bad snakes”.

Opossums
Opossums are very simple animals. They are nocturnal animals so they will be spotted or heard at night. Opossums are large rounded animals with skinny tails. Opossums also have a long pink nose and big leafy like ears. They have a darkish gray fur in this area and are mainly found near farm land or wooded areas and near water.
Damage to wooden buildings may take one of several forms. Holes may be drilled into wood siding, eaves, window frames, and trim boards. Woodpeckers prefer cedar and redwood siding, but will damage pine, fir, cypress, and others when the choices are limited. Natural or stained wood surfaces are preferred over painted wood, and newer houses in an area are often primary targets. Particularly vulnerable to damage are rustic-appearing, channeled (grooved to simulate reverse board and batten) plywoods with cedar or redwood veneers. Imperfections (core gaps) in the intercore plywood layers exposed by the vertical grooves may harbor insects. The woodpeckers often break out these core gaps, leaving characteristic narrow horizontal damage patterns in their search for insects.
Home owners are known to face an incredible number of difficulties with keeping their properties maintained in a viable manner. Situations are known to occur where professional guidance is needed to ensure that bugs and rodents or even various animals are removed from the property in a safe and productive manner. Anyone dealing with this type of complication should know the basics of choosing an Atlanta pest removal company.

Voles
ENTRY: Moles and Voles are commonly confused because they look similar and cause the same type of damage to lawns. Both tunnel beneath your grass, Moles looking for insects and grubs, Voles eating vegetation. Both species are rather anti-social so you will rarely have more then 1 or 2 in your yard although you may think there is an army when you walk across your yard and sink into tunnel after tunnel.
