Plaque can harden into a rough, porous substance known as calculus (or tartar). This can occur both above and below the gum line and between teeth. As periodontal disease progresses, the surrounding and supporting gum tissue and bone that hold teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this leads to tooth loss. You can still have periodontal disease without the presence of bleeding, redness, and swelling, so frequent dental exams are necessary. Further, pain is usually not associated with periodontal disease. This disease damages the teeth, gum, and jawbone of up to 80% of Americans by age 45 according to research studies. Gums should not bleed when you touch or brush them. If you develop gingivitis, the initial stage of periodontal disease, your gums will primarily be affected.

In an effort to utilize efficient technology, we use ultrasonic scalers for most adult dental cleanings and scaling procedures. These devices use ultrasonic vibrations to help break down the plaque and calculus on the teeth that cause gingivitis and periodontal disease. The ultrasonic cleaners create microscopic bubbles that implode on the surface of the tooth vibrating thousands of times per second, killing microbes and removing plaque and tartar in the process. Our instruments use a thin tip to better navigate the periodontal pockets to help maintain optimal gingival health.

Veneers
A beautiful smile is the result of well-aligned teeth that are fully exposed. If excess gum tissue covers part of the anatomy of teeth and results in teeth that appear too short or a smile that exhibits too much gum tissue, aesthetic crown lengthening is indicated. Aesthetic crown lengthening is performed to remove excess gum tissue to create a gum line at the correct position and expose the full anatomy of teeth. This procedure may be performed on natural teeth or on teeth that are planned for restoration with crowns or veneers.
Crowns
Even though it takes so long for osseointegration, the sutures are typically removed seven to ten days after surgery. After the healing process, your general dentist will start the process to make a new crown, etc.
Bridges
Dental implants are a state-of-the-art way of replacing teeth. Implants are surgical-grade titanium screw-like fixtures that replace teeth with permanent restorations (crowns and bridges) or support removable appliances. Serving as the only restoration that replaces the entire natural tooth structure, this artificial root alone offers numerous benefits beyond any other prosthetic. For starters, the implant post provides a firm foundation for a dental restoration that will not shift or move in the mouth like dentures or bridges. Additionally, because it is placed directly in the jawbone, a dental implant also helps to preserve the natural bone structure by preventing deterioration that typically occurs when a tooth is missing.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery

Osseous Surgery
During the Osseous Surgery procedure (also known as “Pocket Reduction Procedure”), the gum tissue is folded back allowing access to remove the bacteria and deposits of tartar hiding underneath. Removal of any tissue that is too damaged to survive may also occur. The gums are then stitched back into the appropriate locations around the affected teeth. Now that the tooth and root are free of bacteria, plaque, and tartar, and the pockets have been reduced, the gums can reattach to the teeth.
Tooth Extractions
Tooth extraction may also be necessary if you have any teeth that are severely decayed or damaged. These teeth will need to be removed before the implants can be placed.
Ridge Augmentation
Ridge augmentations are done to restore and enhance normal ridge contours in areas where teeth have been removed. These sites are usually planned for tooth replacement with pontics (fake teeth) as part of a bridge or in sites planned for dental implants. Ridge augmentations may include the use of connective tissue or the use of bone grafts or both in combination. Ridge augmentation helps maintain natural-looking dentition and the avoidance of facial collapse.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure in which synthetic bone material is added to the jawbone to provide support for the implants. This is often necessary when the jawbone has been weakened by periodontal disease or tooth loss.
