Dr. Lingo maintains a general neurosurgical practice, evaluating and treating patients with brain, spine, and peripheral nerve disorders. His interests include: neuro-oncology, meningiomas, skull base tumors including pituitary tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, Chiari malformations, neurovascular conditions such as aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, spinal tumors, degenerative neck and spine disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, and ulnar neuropathy. Disabilities resulting from a TBI depend upon the severity of the injury, the location of the injury, and the age and general health of the individual. Some common disabilities include problems with cognition (thinking, memory, and reasoning), sensory processing (sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell), communication (expression and understanding), and behavior or mental health (depression, anxiety, personality changes, aggression, acting out, and social inappropriateness). More serious head injuries may result in stupor, an unresponsive state, but one in which an individual can be aroused briefly by a strong stimulus, such as sharp pain; coma, a state in which an individual is totally unconscious, unresponsive, unaware, and unarousable; vegetative state, in which an individual is unconscious and unaware of his or her surroundings, but continues to have a sleep-wake cycle and periods of alertness; and a persistent vegetative state (PVS), in which an individual stays in a vegetative state for more than a month.

Patients with mild to moderate injuries may receive skull and neck X-rays to check for bone fractures or spinal instability. For moderate to severe cases, the imaging test is a computed tomography (CT) scan. Moderately to severely injured patients receive rehabilitation that involves individually tailored treatment programs in the areas of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, physiatry (physical medicine), psychology/psychiatry, and social support.

Ultrasound
In some cases, carotid artery disease can be detected during a normal physician checkup. In other cases, further testing may be needed. These tests may include ultrasound imaging, CT angiography (CTA), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), or traditional angiography. Angiography consists of an X-ray of the carotid arteries and arteries of the brain taken by injecting a special dye into the arteries. CTA and MRA are relatively new imaging techniques that avoid most of the risks associated with angiography, however, CTA and MRA images are sometimes not quite as definitive as angiography.
MRI
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses a magnetic field and radio waves to generate highly detailed pictures of the inside of your body. Since X-rays only show bones, MRIs are needed to visualize soft tissues like discs in the spine. This type of imaging is very safe and usually pain-free.

X-Rays
Computed Tomography
Discography is used to determine the internal structure of a disc. It is performed by using a local anesthetic and injecting a dye into the disc under X-ray guidance. An X-ray and CT scan are performed to view the disc composition to determine if its structure is normal or abnormal. In addition to the disc appearance, your doctor will note any pain associated with this injection. The benefit of a discogram is that it enables the physician to confirm the disc level that is causing your pain. This ensures that surgery will be more successful and reduces the risk of operating on the wrong disc.
Chemotherapy
When surgery is necessary to remove brain tumors, surgeons at Neurosurgical & Spine Institute utilize new developments in radiation and chemotherapy treatments such as gamma knife radiosurgery. They are experienced in treating brain tumors and recognizing the best course of treatment for patients on an individual basis.
Radiation Therapy
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) can treat brain tumors of any shape or size while at the same time sparing the greatest amount of normal tissue. This highly advanced technique involves using digital images of the tumor to coordinate a three-dimensional approach in which beams of radiation are delivered to it. The radiation is controlled, and, therefore, can better target the region where the tumor resides with a more concentrated dosage.

During his residency in neurological surgery at Ohio State Medical Center, Dr. Thompson, Jr. received the Chairman’s Award in surgery and the Children’s Hospital Research Foundation Oral Presentation Award. He also did an internship in general surgery at Ohio State Medical Center.
Whiplash
Like back strain, neck strain is an irritation to tendons, muscles and ligaments in the upper back and neck area. Whiplash is characterized by a collection of symptoms that occur following damage to the neck, usually because of sudden extension and flexion, such as in a car accident.

Dr. Reames IV is a board certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon with expertise in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery. He also performs peripheral nerve surgery and cranial neurosurgery including brain tumors.
Robotic Surgery
He completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Virginia. During that time he also spent 12 months in New Zealand practicing intracranial neurosurgery before serving as chief resident at UVA. He went on to complete a fellowship in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery at the Semmes-Murphey Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee where he gained special training in tubular spine surgery, robotic surgery, and scoliosis correction.

Physical Therapists

Physical Therapy
Some smaller fractures can heal with physical therapy treatment and rest, however severe fractures will require surgery to reposition the bones and can include paralysis if the injury damaged the spinal cord. Spinal fractures and dislocations can pinch, compress, and even tear the spinal cord.Â
Occupational Therapy
Depending on the location of and the damage caused by a stroke, many stroke victims can recover with physical or occupational therapy. Some lifestyle changes are also recommended such as eating right and exercising to prevent heart disease and high blood pressure, not smoking, controlling diabetes and taking anti-clotting medications such as aspirin.
Slipped Disc
Surgery may be recommended in some cases such as the repair of a slipped disc, the removal of benign or malignant tumors or the surgical release of ligaments or tendons.
