Cryotherapy
Pneumatic Retinopexy – a combination of treating the tear with cryotherapy (freezing treatment) or laser and the use of a gas bubble injected into the eye to help the eye get rid of the fluid. The picture shows the injection of a gas bubble that will cover the tear in the retina. This prevents fluid from getting behind the retina and allows the body to absorb the fluid and flatten the retina.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness. It can damage your vision so gradually you don’t notice any loss of vision until the disease is at an advanced stage. This is an eye condition that develops when too much fluid pressure builds up inside of the eye. The increase in pressure, called intraocular pressure, can damage the optic nerve, which transmits images to the brain. If damage to the optic nerve from high eye pressure continues, glaucoma will cause loss of vision. Without treatment, it can cause total permanent blindness within a few years. Because most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain from this increased pressure, it is important to have regular routine eye exams so that any issues can be diagnosed and treated before long-term visual loss occurs.

June 28, 2023 – Savannah, GA – Georgia Eye Institute (GEI) announces the arrival of Dr. Christopher Richmond to the practice. Dr. Richmond is an Ophthalmologist specializing in cataract and refractive surgery.
Cataract Surgery
Georgia Eye Institute is proud to offer refractive cataract surgery using the LenSx laser for our Laser Cataract surgery patients. It is the most advanced method of cataract surgery. Patients now have the option of choosing a computer-controlled, bladeless cataract laser to take care of some of the critical steps in the cataract surgery procedure. Compared to the traditional method where a miniature scalpel is used to create incisions, this new method allows the surgeon to create incisions with femtosecond laser pulses. The LenSx laser also breaks apart the cloudy cataract lens and creates a perfect size capsulotomy. The LenSx uses integrated optical coherence tomography (OCT) which captures precise, high resolution images of the patient’s eyes. This allows the surgery to be 100% customized. Dr. Kandl grew up in Charleston, SC, though he spent time in multiple states and countries as his father was active duty Air Force. He completed his undergraduate studies at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC where he received both academic and athletic scholarships as a member of the men’s varsity soccer team. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biology. He then attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Dr. Kandl completed his internship in internal medicine at Boston University and his residency in ophthalmology at Rutgers University. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in Global Blindness Prevention through the University of Nebraska spending time in developing countries seeing patients, performing surgeries and teaching local ophthalmologists. He then completed his 2-year ASOPRS fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
