Though all other criteria will vary, most commonly we see the insurances require a specific length supervised diet program, a one-time visit with a nutritionist for an evaluation and/or a psychological assessment. Emotional Support Group — This group is for patients who are still in the weight loss phase. This group focuses on identifying habits, food addiction, thinking errors, self-defeating beliefs, and unresolved emotional issues which, if left untreated, are likely to sabotage the patient’s long-term success. Patients are encouraged to meet their weight loss goal and are carefully directed in how to approach the maintenance phase successfully. This group is taught by Erika Reichard, CSW, who is a Certified Social Worker. Erika graduated from Weber State University in 2014 with her bachelor’s degree in psychology. She went on to graduate with her Masters of Social Work degree from Walden University in 2021. She currently works at the Weight Treatment Center in St. Mark’s Hospital as an outpatient behavioral health specialist. Having undergone Gastric Bypass surgery herself in 2018, she uses her personal experiences and passion to help others.

Dr. Simper performed his first bariatric procedures in 1984 at Wilford Hall Medical Center, in Texas. Currently, he performs laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and duodenal switch. In addition to general surgery procedures.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. McKinlay graduated summa cum laude from Brigham Young University in 1993 and then received his medical degree from the University of Utah in 1997, where he graduated with honors in medicine and surgery. After completing General Surgery residency at the University of Arizona, he began a minimally invasive surgery (MIS) fellowship at the University of Kentucky, buy phentermine melbourne focusing on research in MIS. Dr. Nicholas Paulk is a native to Salt Lake City where he attended the University of Utah for his undergraduate degree in Biology. He then went to OHSU in Portland Oregon for medical school and proceeded to Exempla St. Joseph’s for general surgery residency in Denver Colorado. He returned to Salt Lake in 2011 to practice General Surgery with emphasis on advanced laparoscopy and robotic surgery. He joined Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians in order to pursue bariatric surgery in addition to advanced laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery. Dr. Paulk is board certified in general surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgery.

Breast Lift
For patients who feel that, despite their best efforts, they have unwanted hanging or loose skin, plastic surgery is an option. About 25-30% of our patients seek a plastic surgery referral to remove excess skin via a tummy tuck, breast lift, brachioplasty (arms), or face lift, etc. The surgeons at RMAP do not perform this type of surgery but can provide you with referral sources of trusted plastic surgeons that have worked with our patients before and have a good track record. Rarely, insurance may cover skin removal surgery if hygiene or other medical issues are associated with the excess tissue. Check with your insurance company to see if they provide these benefits and what criteria may be involved.

Dr. Rodrick McKinlay joined Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians in 2004 as a board certified general surgeon with expertise in minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery. In addition to the surgical treatment of obesity, his practice involves a wide range of minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, including hernia repair, gallbladder removal, anti-reflux surgery, and the surgical treatment of spleen and adrenal disorders.
Bariatric Surgery
Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians offers a free information class for those considering bariatric surgery for themselves or a loved one. This class is held weekly and details bariatric surgery, the risks and benefits, insurance coverage and qualifications for the surgery. A bariatric surgeon will be in attendance to discuss bariatric surgery and answer your questions. This seminar generally last about an hour and a half.
