Glaucoma includes a group of conditions that cause damage to the optic nerve. These can often develop over many years without causing pain â€“ so you may not experience vision loss until the disease has progressed. Glaucoma cannot be prevented, and vision lost to it cannot be restored. Left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness. For these reasons, regular eye exams and early detection are critical.

Cataracts
Reducing the amount of ultraviolet light exposure by wearing a wide-brim hat and sunglasses may reduce your risk for developing a cataract but once developed there is no cure except to have the cataract surgically removed. Early detection through regular eye exams can help maintain the clearest vision possible.
Cataract Surgery
By the age of 65, most people will have formed cataracts, which occur when your human lens becomes clouded to such an extent that it has an effect on your vision and quality of life. This condition typically comes about with age, but can also result from trauma, disease, and use of select medications. Several groups have an increased risk for developing cataracts and potentially need cataract surgery.
Eye Exam
Children without known eye problems should have their first eye exam at about age two, although itâ€™s never too early to test a childâ€™s vision and eye health. Comprehensive eye exams are essential in the diagnosis and treatment of vision problems, injury and disease. Early detection allows for treatment to begin before the child experiences difficulty in school due to poor vision, or before permanent damage has been done to the eye(s). Exams test visual acuity, eye tracking, and focusing skills, and detect problems such as near- and far-sightedness, amblyopia, crossed eyes, dyslexia, and color blindness.

Shasta Eye Medial Group specializes in the treatment of individuals affected by diabetic eye conditions. Diabetic Retinopathy is a condition that can develop in patients with uncontrolled diabetes. Over time, high levels of sugar in the blood can cause blockages to the blood vessels in the retina. Â This can lead to leakage of blood or growth of new, abnormal blood vessels that can cause several problems including vision loss. Diabetic Retinopathy can be caught early by routine eye exams and can be treated by changes in diet, lifestyle, and blood sugar testing. If you are diabetic and notice changes in your vision, it is highly recommended that you visit your eye doctor to evaluate your condition.

Ultrasound
In traditional cataract surgery, once the surgeon creates the small incision in your cornea, they will use a probe to create sound waves, known as ultrasound, to break up the cloudy lens. Your surgeon then suctions out the broken pieces of the lens and replaces them with the new intraocular lens. During this procedure, the incision is closed with a liquid seal, and stitches are usually not needed.
