Glaucoma is a disease defined as optic nerve damage. The primary cause of this nerve damage is elevated pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure). Damage to the optic nerve can lead to progressive sight loss over the course of a patient’s life. Over the past several decades in the United States, the use of surgery as a stand-alone procedure for treating glaucoma has declined steadily. This is due to the fact that the medications (eyedrops) available to treat the disease have improved dramatically, while standard glaucoma surgeries are still considered to be high-risk for sight-threatening complications.

Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration can be categorized as Wet or Dry Macular Degeneration. This classifies both the type and how best to treat the disease.

Cataract Surgery
Dr. Atodaria and the other physicians and staff members at Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center will be happy to provide information to any patient who is interested in this surgical option. For those not interested in the microstent, other combined procedures are available. For example, Dr. Atodaria can perform a laser procedure at the time of cataract surgery known as endocyclophotocoagulation (ECP). This procedure has been paired successfully with cataract surgery for nearly two decades and has been shown to be very effective.
Eye Exam
A typical vision plan includes a wellness eye exam, lenses and an allowance for contacts, frames or both. Instead of paying full-price at the time, you’re paying a discounted price each month. A vision plan can save you a few hundred dollars each year.

Diabetic Retinopathy
The retina has small blood vessels that can be damaged by chronically high blood sugar levels or high blood pressure. Diabetic Retinopathy occurs when these vessels start to leak, or hemorrhage, distorting one’s vision. Often, the abnormal blood vessels that develop in Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR) can create traction ( VMT ) on the delicate retinal surface. Vitrectomy surgery is often required for traction and retinal detachments associated with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Botox
Over time, repeated contracture of facial muscles can lead to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The areas most commonly affected include the forehead, glabella (i.e. the area between the eyebrows), and crow’s feet, along with the outer corner of the eyelids. Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport belong to the class of medications known as “neuromodulators.” Neuromodulators function by relaxing muscles in the face, which can decrease the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Blepharoplasty
Lower eyelid surgery (or lower eyelid blepharoplasty) is a procedure that helps to improve the appearance of “bags” and dark circles in the lower eyelids. This improvement is achieved by a combination of different techniques that involve the removing and repositioning of fat. Skin in the lower eyelid can also be resurfaced with a laser at the time of lower eyelid blepharoplasty to help improve the appearance of fine lines wrinkles. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty can also be performed with upper eyelid blepharoplasty to help rejuvenate the appearance of the entire aesthetic unit around the eyes.
Cosmetic Surgery
The LASIK procedure is often considered an elective or cosmetic surgery, which means many insurance companies may not cover LASIK. Most patients end up paying for the majority (if not all) of the procedure out of pocket. It’s still very much worth asking your insurance company about your options and if your policy includes a benefit for advanced vision correction. Each person’s needs and circumstances are different.

Inflammation may affect the conjunctiva, a highly specialized skin covering the front of the eye. It may be caused by allergies, reactions to chemicals or infections. Infections may be caused by viruses, fungi, bacteria or protozoa. If the infection affects the cornea, it may cause a corneal ulcer. Corneal infections are associated with redness, pain, light sensitivity, and reduced vision in the affected eye. Any infection in the cornea can lead to scar formation. Scarring can reduce the quality of vision, so prompt diagnosis and treatment of infections is critical. Risk factors for corneal infections include contact lens wear, injury or eye trauma.
