Dental Examination
Dental radiographs (x-rays) are essential, preventative, diagnostic tools that provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam. Dentists and dental hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and complete an accurate treatment plan. Without x-rays, problem areas may go undetected.
X-rays
Digital radiography (digital x-ray) is the latest technology used to take dental x-rays. This technique uses an electronic sensor (instead of x-ray film) that captures and stores the digital image on a computer. This image can be instantly viewed and enlarged helping the dentist and dental hygienist detect problems easier. Digital x-rays reduce radiation 80-90% compared to the already low exposure of traditional dental x-rays.

Dental Sealants
A sealant is a thin, plastic coating applied to the chewing surface of molars, premolars and any deep grooves (called pits and fissures) of teeth. More than 75% of dental decay begins in these deep grooves. Teeth with these conditions are hard to clean and are very susceptible to decay. A sealant protects the tooth by sealing deep grooves, creating a smooth, easy to clean surface.

Fillings
A silver amalgam filling is used to repair a tooth that is affected by decay, cracks, fractures, etc. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth will be removed and then filled with a silver filling.
Resin Composite
Inlays/Onlays: These restorations are custom made fillings. They can be made of composite resin, porcelain or gold and are made by a dental laboratory and placed by a dentist. Inlays/onlays are usually best for the posterior chewing surfaces of teeth and are utilized to conservatively repair teeth that have large defective/unattractive fillings or have been damaged by decay or trauma.
Veneers
For LUMINEERS® to be applied, the underlying teeth, bone and gums must be healthy. Patients with gum disease or tooth decay must be treated prior to LUMINEERS® placement. Dr. Birnbaum is Assistant Professor, Part-time of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He served as Faculty Supervisor of Harvard's Licensed Practitioner Clinic and is the recipient of numerous recognition's and commendations from his patients, students and colleagues alike. He received the Faculty Award, the highest award bestowed upon a faculty member by the graduating class, and the Part-Time Faculty Award from his colleagues in the Department of Restorative Dentistry in Bio-materials Sciences at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. In order to save the tooth, the pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth), nerves, bacteria, and any decay are removed and the resulting space is filled with special, medicated, dental materials, which restore the tooth to its full function.

Periodontal Surgery
If the pockets do not heal after scaling and root planning, periodontal surgery may be needed to reduce pocket depths, making teeth easier to clean. Your dentist may also recommend that you see a Periodontist (specialist of the gums and supporting bone).
Deep Cleaning
If the disease has progressed to more advanced stages, a special periodontal cleaning called scaling and root planning (deep cleaning) will be recommended. Herbert S. Birnbaum received his B.A. from Brandeis University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in an accelerated three year course of study. In 1980 he received his D.M.D. degree from the Henry M. Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry at Boston University. While in dental school, he was chosen by the international student body of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity to serve as International Undergraduate Representative. He then completed a residency in General Dental Practice at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and Montefiore Hospital, and subsequently returned to his hometown of Newton, Massachusetts, where he established his private practice of general dentistry.
