Therefore, the key is individualized care for each patient. At Pain Management Center of Lansing (PMCL) we have the resources to give individualized care. We work closely with, Dr. Amit Masih of Michigan State University's Department of Neurology. Dr. Masih is fellowship trained at the University of Michigan in headache management. Coordinated with the pain physicians in the practice, interventional procedures can be done when needed to alleviate the pain that occurs with certain types of headaches.

In addition to individual pain psychology sessions, the pain psychologists at PMC Lansing host support group sessions at our pain clinic where patients can discuss topics related to dealing with chronic back, neck, shoulder, leg, and cancer pain. During group therapy, patients find that they are able to learn from and support each other. Most importantly, they realize they are not alone in battling their way through this health challenge. Group discussion topics may include: pain coping tools, ways to manage emotions related to having pain, ways to get the family involved and to be supportive, stress management training, depression management tools, anger management tools, and assertiveness training. In a supportive group environment, patients share their experiences and encourage one another to make use of key tools that can help them live better.

Aside from asking you a series of questions that pertain to your symptoms – such as location, frequency, intensity, radiation, and duration of pain – as well as establishing your history of illness, injury, and surgery, the physicians at our pain management center may recommend tests to obtain an accurate pain diagnosis. Some procedures may be performed strictly for diagnostic purposes, while others may have therapeutic benefit. For example, x-rays, computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT) scans, bone scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are generally used to determine what is causing the pain, and epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, and peripheral nerve blocks often serve a dual role – to diagnose and help reduce pain.

The journey to your pain relief starts with an accurate diagnosis of your acute or chronic pain problems. During your initial consultation, our pain management specialists will ask you a series of questions pertaining to your symptoms, such as the location, frequency, intensity, radiation, and duration of your pain, as well as your history of illness, injury, and surgery. With your release, our pain management doctors will obtain documents of previous evaluations from other facilities like pain management clinics, as well as diagnostic studies and treatments so they have a complete picture of your medical history. Depending on you and your condition, a physical examination may be conducted and diagnostic evaluations may be ordered. Such evaluations may be done with the use of sophisticated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment, CT scans, X-rays, blood tests, and other devices. Complete laboratory and radiology services are available within our medical office complex.

Physical Therapy
For PMC Lansing, the focus is on integrated care and individualized treatment. When patients or referring physicians call our pain center or submit a Request First Appointment form online, our staff will set up an initial evaluation to acquire all information regarding pain complaints. Upon appropriate release by the patient, we will obtain documents of previous evaluations from other pain clinics or providers, diagnostic studies, and treatments so our pain management team has an accurate picture of your medical history. A physical examination will be conducted and diagnostic evaluations will be ordered as necessary. Based on you and your acute or chronic pain condition, we will formulate an individualized treatment plan and discuss it with you in detail. Options regarding interventional pain management, pharmacological (or medication) pain management, physical therapy and rehabilitation, psychological pain management, and other modalities will be provided and scheduled as needed. Additional referrals to other specialists, including spine surgeons, will be made depending on our evaluation in concert with your referring physician. We provide written correspondence to your referring physician outlining your treatment plan and your progress through treatment.
