When I reached age 70, I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica. My weight was down to 132 pounds from 175 lbs and I had no energy. For two years, I consulted with rheumatologists, and took prednisone. I ballooned in weight. My skin became so dry that I had to consult a dermatologist. The Sed rate went down with prednisone and back up again when the dosage was lowered. I tried acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments, as well as a Tibetan practitioner to help support my system. Having begun her medical career working with nutritional legend Dr. Robert Atkins of “The Atkins Diet” fame, Dr. Leder has had extensive experience in the field of weight loss. Atkins pioneering work focused on the use of diet to regulate insulin and reduce insulin resistance.
Nutritional Counseling
After graduating from medical school, Leder had the opportunity to work with the recently-deceased, world famous diet and nutrition authority, Dr. Robert Atkins. It is there where her interest in alternative medicine really took on a practical form. “I learned so much from Dr. Atkins, sitting by his side several hours every day for months. He had a remarkably open mind about medicine, organized a great medical team, and was not afraid to take on the medical establishment long before alternative medicine and high protein became acceptable. When I think about it now, he was truly a pioneer.” She came away with a strong sense of really wanting to help people, but with a very pragmatic approach. “Medicine cannot successfully be practiced piecemeal - the whole person must be considered, not just the symptoms which generate complaints. Sometimes I’m actually grateful for the symptoms because these are some of the best clues we have as to what’s really going on in the body. I will consider any treatment modality that will help my patients. Of course, the least invasive methods with the fewest side effects are first line choices for me. Natural medicines work nicely in this regard. I don’t pretend to have all the answers. I am always open to new concepts. That is my obligation as a medical doctor. If I don’t have an answer, I always remind a patient that that doesn’t equate with there not being an answer. It means we have to keep looking together.” Her patients love her. She often spends hours talking to her patients about their history and lives, trying to piece together the seemingly unconnected facts which, when viewed together, provide her critical insights into why her patients have evolved health-wise as they have. With all her years of practice in the alternative medicine field, Robin never lost interest in psychiatry. She regularly attends continuing medical education courses in the field. This year, she is enrolled in a formal course of study at the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis.
Primary Care
If you already have a primary care doctor, Dr. Leder will gladly work with them to optimize your healthcare. She is available in the office three days per week, and is not in any HMOs, so it might be to a patient’s advantage to have a relationship with a primary care doctor while they are seeing Dr. Leder. In some instances, people do use Dr. Leder as their primary care doctor. In these instances, they often use the local walk-in centers for quick emergency needs on the days or nights when the office is closed.
Smoking Cessation
During the her medical career, Dr. Leder has served as consulting physician to several weight loss centers and smoking cessation clinics. In addition to internal medicine, the doctor is trained in meditation, and is familiar with many programs within the self-awareness and recovery movements. Specifically, she was an avid pupil of Dr. Alexander Lowen, internationally-renowned founder of Bioenergetics, a powerful physically-based approach to psychiatry.
Sleep Disorders
Insomnia comes in several different forms: difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, poor quality sleep, light sleep, difficulty falling back asleep, and early waking. In order to properly treat your sleep disorder, Dr. Leder will need to thoroughly evaluate your problem, as to what type or types of insomnia you have, get a thorough idea of your lifestyle and pre-bedtime behavior pattern, and test you appropriately to figure out the source of your insomnia.
Family Practice
In 1999, Dr. Leder attended her first DAN! Protocol Conference in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The focus at that time was on nutrient therapies, enzymes, and secretin, and the presentations about their effectiveness were moderately positive. More importantly, though, there was a lot of excitement and optimism about the new developments in this rapidly emerging field. In 2004, Dr. Leder returned with a nutritionist friend to participate in the Mclean, Virginia DAN! Conference and to take the clinician’s course. The two made plans to work together on this treatment venture - but life intervened with family health problems and loss, and so, the planned autism sub practice was put on hold. In the fall of 2008, Dr. Leder again embarked on a much deeper personal course of study and, after a trip to San Diego’s DAN! Conference and yet another clinician’s course, as well as a course in the use of hyperbaric oxygen, bringing her years of alternative, psychological and autism training to bear, she began to see patients on the spectrum regularly at her Hackensack office.

A detailed history (physical health, diet, exercise, health habits, psychological, stress) is taken, and a complete physical examination is performed. Depending on its complexity, the time it takes to perform your history may vary, but typically this will take from 60 to 90 minutes. An EKG (electrocardiogram) may be done as well. If you have had an EKG performed with the past 6 months, bring it with you.

Cum laude honors in Psychology (and minored in Theatre Arts). Upon completion of her studies at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York City, she received the degree of Doctor of Medicine, and continued her post-graduate training in Internal Medicine at the Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in the Bronx, N.Y. She is currently licensed to practice medicine in the states of New York, New Jersey, and Florida. Her long-standing interest in nutrition and orthomolecular psychiatry led her to accept a position at the Atkins Center in Manhattan in 1988. The doctor sat with Robert Atkins every afternoon, observing his brand of complementary medicine first hand for months, and attended regular discussion meetings at his home. This opportunity served Dr. Leder as an invaluable introduction to the office practice of complementary medicine.

Literally from childhood, she has been fascinated with anything related to this topic, beginning with the original work in so-called “orthomolecular psychiatry” (the use of large doses of nutritional supplements and diet in place of psychiatric drugs to treat psychological conditions) of Nobelist Linus Pauling and Canadian pioneer Abram Hoffer. The doctor was also influenced by the writings of R.D.Laing. Laing believed that much could be learned by a patient in severe psychiatric distress if their “breakdown” was viewed as a life changing piece in their psychological development, to be navigated carefully and explored, and the patient was actively supported throughout this phase, rather that suppressed and all efforts placed on reverting him back to his or her prior (unstable and prone to breakdown) state. Dr; Leder also focused on the character and bodywork of Freud’s protégée, Wilhelm Reich.
