Dr. Eric Poulsen is the most caring LASIK surgeon in the Valley. He made me feel really comfortable and relaxed and was very caring throughout the entire procedure. They also use the latest technology in LASIK surgery. I would recommend him to anyone who is considering LASIK.

Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD or AMD) is one of the most common causes of poor vision after the age of 60. AMD is a deterioration or breakdown of the macula which can result in partial or complete loss of your central vision. The macula is a small area of the central retina that allows us to see fine details clearly. The vision that comes from the macula is what allows us to perform many of our daily activities such as reading and driving. There are different forms of macular degeneration and the recommended treatment would be based on the type and severity of the disease. Although age is the biggest risk factor for developing AMD, heredity, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and smoking have also been identified as risk factors.

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye and is considered a normal part of the aging process. When light rays enter a healthy eye, they pass through the naturally clear lens where they are focused onto the retina to provide a clear image. When light rays enter an eye with a cataract, they are distorted which creates a hazy or blurred image.

Diabetic Retinopathy
With diabetic retinopathy, the retinal blood vessels become damaged as a result of the diabetes. These damaged vessels can leak blood and fluid into the retina, or they can become blocked, depriving the retina of oxygen and other nutrients it needs to stay healthy. If detected early enough, progression of diabetic retinopathy can be reduced with better glucose control. If left unchecked, diabetic retinopathy can cause hemorrhages, retinal detachment, macular edema, and neovascular glaucoma. Any one of those conditions has the potential to cause significant vision loss. Once diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, your doctor will determine if and when treatment or further evaluation is necessary based on the severity of the disease. The most common treatments for diabetic retinopathy are retinal laser surgery and medicine injections called intravitreal injections.

Our surgeons, Eric J. Poulsen, MD and Azhar I. Salahuddin, MD are both board-certified and utilize advanced surgical methods to make the procedure quick, pain-free, with no need for stitches. During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed with a technique called phacoemulsification. This process uses a small instrument that emits high-frequency ultrasound to break-up and gently remove the cataract material. Once the cataract is completely removed, it is replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens implant (IOL). The entire surgery is completed in just 15 to 30 minutes and when it’s over, most patients can almost immediately see an improvement in their vision.

Botox
Botox Injections: Wrinkles are common once you enter your late twenties, and develop into deeper lines with time. However, quick and early treatment can reduce them and in some cases completely eliminate them. So, if you have wrinkles around your eyes, including the eye corner, between the eyes and even frown-lines, Botox injection is the answer.Since Botox can only be administered in very small quantities at a time, the whole procedure usually spans over a few appointments. The injections administer Botox into muscles, which is a protein that blocks the muscle movements that encourage wrinkling. The whole procedure hardly takes a few seconds.The best thing about this treatment is that it is not a surgery and hence, will not leave any scars. However, do not expect wrinkles to disappear overnight – it usually takes a few days until you see some positive changes.
Eyelid Surgery
Yes, you can have a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) after LASIK surgery as the latter is not a contraindication to having blepharoplasty or another cosmetic eye surgery. Consult with your LASIK surgeon to determine how long you should wait after your vision correction surgery before undergoing a blepharoplasty.
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty: Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure used to help uplift droopy eyes. So if you feel that the skin above your eyes is becoming loose and giving your eyes a droopy feel or the droop is affecting your vision, this procedure is ideal.You are usually called in an hour or so before the surgery is scheduled and some usual tests will be carried out to make sure you are ready. Usually local anesthesia is administered for this surgery, and a relaxant may also be given. During the surgery on the upper eyelid, the excess skin is removed from around the inner corner of the eye.

Skin Cancer
Yes, polarized sunglasses protect your eyes from UVA, UVB and UVC radiation. Extended exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer on the eyelids and around the eyes. It can also contribute to diseases like cataracts. Staying indoors doesn’t necessarily protect you from harmful UV rays; wearing a pair of polarized sunglasses can.
