Dental Care
Sometimes, keeping Tiger’s chompers healthy can feel like a big job. Luckily, our practice provides advanced veterinary dentistry services in addition to basic dental care.
Vaccination
Dog vaccinations play a critical role in protecting your dog from many dangerous and even fatal diseases. While state law requires all dogs are vaccinated for rabies, there are a number of other vaccinations that can protect your dog from serious diseases that are easily preventable.
Behavioral Counseling
Yesterday. Obedience training is something I'm really passionate about! You can't start too early with dog socialization and behavior. It's a lifelong process, but, especially in terms of development periods in dogs, the earlier we can start having a positive influence on them, the better off they will be long term.
Nutritional Counseling
We analyze cat bloodwork to assess features of the blood, including red and white cell count, immunity status, and the measure of hemoglobin, which is the actual substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen. We also examine hydration status, anemia, infection, blood clotting ability and immune system response. A CBC is essential for cats that have symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, pale gums or loss of appetite. A CBC can also detect bleeding disorders or other unseen abnormalities as part of a pre-surgery risk assessment
Comprehensive Examination
It is very important to have a veterinarian examine your cat at least once a year. Cats age significantly faster than humans and therefore it is imperative for cat owners to stay on top of wellness exams in order to catch any potential health problems before they begin. Most cat illnesses are much easier and less expensive to treat and cure when caught in the early stages before they progress or develop complications. Therefore, regular cat wellness exams are the cornerstone of preventive veterinary medicine.

Since 1983 the veterinary staff at Freeport Veterinary Hospital has made heartworm prevention for dogs an important part of our approach to preventive care. A heartworm infection can lead to numerous health problems up to and including early death. Therefore, heartworm prevention cannot be ignored. Our team is here to educate you and protect your dog from this terrible disease.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
A vaccination is an injection of a mixture of molecules that will help stimulate an immune response to a specific disease. A common one would be the rabies vaccine. In the rabies vaccine, there are parts of the rabies virus, not the entire virus. It's not an active or live virus, but parts of the virus that we inject along with other chemicals into your cat to help them start to build antibodies, to protect them against exposure to rabies, and keep them safe. We also have vaccines for many different diseases in cats. There is the feline leukemia vaccine and what we call the distemper vaccine, a combination of several diseases that can cause feline distemper and various respiratory diseases.

Pain medication – we offer several different types of pain medication which may be prescribed depending on your pet’s general health status and the degree of pain they are experiencing
Vomiting Treatment
Protracted Vomiting or Diarrhea: If your dog vomits once or has a single loose bowel movement, he or she may not require any treatment other than a few hours of resting the stomach and a day or two of bland food. However, repeated vomiting and diarrhea, especially with the presence of blood, can rapidly lead to life-threatening dehydration. This can also be a symptom of major problems such as gastrointestinal obstruction

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Most cats will scratch on occasion but if you notice that the occasional scratch and regular grooming turns into a cat who appears uncomfortable, cat skin problems may be present and you should schedule an appointment with one of the veterinarians here at Freeport Veterinary Hospital.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
While not usually life threatening, allergies in dogs do cause discomfort. Most symptoms are associated with dermatologic problems but some can also lead to chronic respiratory issues in some dogs if untreated for long periods of time. Sometimes an owner will bring their dog to a veterinary appointment, suspecting a serious medical condition and end up finding out that their canine companion has an allergy.

Infection Treatment

Leptospirosis Treatment
We also recommend vaccinating against leptospirosis, which is a fresh water-borne disease, because a lot of people live out in the woods or they go hiking with their pets. We have a lot of wildlife that are often spreaders of that disease, so we do often recommend that one.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Lots of stuff. I mean, I think that the common ones that come to mind are things that are prevented with vaccines. Rabies is one that's required by our state law, and that's required because it's also a public health issue. Rabies is fatal when contracted, there's absolutely nothing we can do, and it is contagious to people. We must keep that one. The second most common vaccine that we give is the distemper combination vaccine. That includes distemper, adenovirus (a type of virus that causes hepatitis), and parvovirus, and I think everybody's relatively familiar with parvovirus. It's a pretty deadly disease, usually affects puppies, and is incredibly expensive to treat, and weâ€™re rarely successful in doing so. The second, PNDAPP, is parainfluenza, a respiratory virus sometimes associated with kennel cough.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Feline Leukemia-Feline Immunodeficiency Virus: This is a common test for kittens and cats, especially those coming from unknown origins. These viruses are interspecies contagious and life threatening, so we recommend feline bloodwork to test for both if you adopt, find or take in a new kitten or cat
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
In addition, this inflammation in the skin will change the health of the skin and allow for secondary invaders such as bacteria and yeast to enter the dog's system. In addition, many of these dogs have a less than optimal local immune response to these secondary invaders making them more susceptible to yeast and bacterial infections. Yeast and bacteria are always present in low numbers on every dog's skin. Unfortunately for dogs with allergies, their skin and immune response are inadequate to fight off these secondary invaders.
Ear Infection Treatment
Mites, or ear mites, can produce itchy ears. This is more commonly seen in kittens. The cat will hold his head sideways indicating discomfort. Cats can also have ear infections which need to be treated promptly by your veterinarian.

Whether your cat or dog is young or old, there will be times when they may experience pain from a variety of causes – from acute injuries to surgery, chronic disease, or arthritis pain. We take pain management very seriously and keep up with the latest pain management strategies. Again, no cookbook approach here. We personalize our pain management techniques to the needs of your pet. Today’s approach to pain is what is called “multi-modal”, meaning that we manage your pet’s comfort with a variety of different things, which often work better together for pain management than using one strategy alone.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
That's where we come in. So you're going to be able to notice if your dog is limping and therefore not acting themselves. But there can also be subtle changes that we may be able to find on blood work or a physical exam that may indicate an underlying medical issue as a cause of a behavioral problem. Some things that we think about, any kind of pain - whether it's joint pain, stomach pain, or any sort of discomfort - can cause behavioral changes. And that can range from anything from lethargy to anxiety to aggression. So it can be a range of things that can happen. Certainly, neurologic conditions could cause behavior changes. And there is some thought that abnormal thyroid levels may play a role in behavioral issues. I think the jury's still out on that in a lot of ways. But it's always worth evaluating.

Raising a healthy cat depends heavily on the type and amount of food they consume on a daily basis. Low-quality cat food and treats high in fat or carbohydrates can negatively affect many aspects of your feline friend's health. Most issues in older pets are wear and tear issues. I try not to treat age as a disease, per se, because everybody ages differently, and that's true in our cats as well. But when we think about older cats, the things that we worry about are things like arthritis, kidney disease, and sometimes thyroid issues. Arthritis leads to mobility issues, and pet owners of senior cats could even see some grooming or litter box issues.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dental disease is a reality for most cats. By age four, many cats have significant gingivitis and many also have periodontal disease. It is a slow progressing but serious disease that causes pain and affects the overall health and wellbeing. Cats will not show signs of oral discomfort. Because the pain associated with dental problems comes on slowly over time, they simply learn to live with it. That is why it is important that all cats see a veterinarian annually to assess their oral health.

Seizure Treatment
Seizures: Although a solitary seizure may not be life-threatening, seizures often come in clusters and can become progressive. Seizures have many causes including the ingestion of a toxic substance or medication. If your dog has never had a seizure and is not currently under the care of a veterinarian for a seizure disorder, we recommend seeking immediate medical attention

Dog Fight: All dogs should be seen by a veterinarian after a dog fight. The bite wounds or puncture wounds on the outside of a dog are usually just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the amount of damage the dog may have sustained during the fight. This is especially important when a small dog has been attacked by a larger dog. A puncture wound on the skin may involve severe damage on the inside of the dog's abdomen or lungs which include a lacerated liver or spleen which will cause internal bleeding or a punctured lung which will cause hypoxia and death if not treated

Lab and X-Rays

Laboratory Services
A blood test or lab test allows us to learn information about your dog's health which can only be found from collecting a sample of blood and having it analyzed. This includes a CBC (complete blood count) and blood chemistries that analyze chemical components in the blood.
X-Ray
With today’s most current digital radiography, our practice takes the x-ray image on advanced machinery which sends it directly to digital x-ray sensors for storage and display on a computer. There is no lag time and no waiting for films to process. This means if the exposure is poor or if Fluffy moved a little bit, we can see the flaws immediately and retake the x-ray right then and there. We can also share the image digitally instead of sending large films out through the mail.
Dental Radiology
I would say the number one reason is that the earlier we find something, the easier it is to fix it. And so when we find early dental disease, we can typically resolve it with just a cleaning. And before we do that cleaning, we do a full examination of the mouth and take dental x-rays to look for underlying problems. But when we're just looking at some mild Gingivitis, that's pretty easy to fix. When dental disease goes unchecked for years and years, we often end up having a lot of tooth decay, and that can end up leading to several extractions, which makes it a much more involved and invasive procedure and also a lot more expensive.
Microchipping
Collar ID tags are a wonderful line of defense for lost cat, but collar ID tags can also become physically separated from your pet. However, microchipping cats ensures that they can be properly and quickly identified by a veterinarian or animal shelter. We strongly believe in the value that microchips bring to the cause of lost cats. Therefore, we want to provide you with insight and education about microchipping cats that will help you make an informed decision as to whether or not a microchipping is right for your feline friend.
