Because the roots in primary (baby) teeth have not fully formed, they have large pulp spaces. A cavity does not have far to go before reaching the pulp chamber. It is best to treat the tooth conservatively until secondary (permanent) teeth replace primary teeth.

When the soft tissue in the pulp chamber is infected or inflamed, it can be removed and a special medication inserted into the chamber to keep the remaining viable pulp alive and avoid complications, such as the need for tooth extraction. This will allow time for the permanent tooth to erupt. In cases where a child's secondary tooth is in need of treatment, this procedure allows time for the roots to form so a proper root canal can be done, increasing the chances for tooth survival.
