Fillings
Veneers
As we age, our smiles sometimes lose a bit of their luster. Other times, you may simply be unhappy with the way your teeth look when you smile. In these cases, porcelain veneers could help restore both beauty and confidence. Porcelain veneers are very thin pieces of porcelain, shaped and color matched to your specifications. After Dr. Swick prepares them by slightly reducing the size of your teeth so the veneers will look natural, they are applied with an incredibly strong bonding agent. Porcelain veneers are a permanent enhancement and they last up to 15 years.
Crowns
Say what? Inlays and onlays are comparable to fillings, but they’re usually bigger and used to strengthen a tooth that is too damaged for just a filling, but not quite damaged enough to justify a crown. Inlays and onlays are made of porcelain, and the difference is which part of the tooth they cover. An inlay covers a corner or some irregular portion of the crown. An onlay covers all four corners of the bite surface.
Bridges
Dr. Swick uses either metal-free or PFM (porcelain fused to metal) crowns and bridges depending on your specific needs. A crown is essentially a helmet for a badly compromised tooth. Most often, crowns are used after a root canal or when a tooth is severely broken. A bridge takes the place of missing teeth. It basically holds replacement teeth in place by getting support from the adjacent healthy teeth.
Dental Bonding
If a person’s smile has gaps or chips, composite bonding may be a good cosmetic option. Composite is a tooth-colored dental material we use to fill gaps,smooth edges, or take care of chips. It looks and feels just like your natural tooth, and can restore balance and harmony to a damaged smile.
Restorative Dentistry
Dental crowns may often be considered a form of restorative dentistry, but they can also hold a cosmetic purpose. A crown, also known as a cap, covers a tooth in its entirety and can change the size, shape, or strength of a tooth. Crowns may also be used after a root canal in order to make the tooth stronger. Crowns are custom-created to blend seamlessly into a smile.

Root Canal Treatment
When a tooth gets infected, the only answer is often a root canal or an extraction (pulling it). We encourage people to keep their natural teeth as much as possible, so root canals afford you that opportunity. While root canals have the reputation of being horribly uncomfortable, it’s actually the infection that precedes them that is painful. Dr. Swick does root canals in house.

Deep Cleaning
Gum disease (periodontitis) is serious business. Did you know there are links between gum disease and heart attack or stroke? We offer a number of different options for treating periodontitis including scaling and root planing, which are very deep cleaning methods; laser treatment; and the antibiotic Arestin. If you have gum disease, Dr. Swick will help you decide which option is right for you.

Dentures
Not all seniors will have dentures. But for those who do, practicing proper denture care is essential for maintaining oral health. Remind or help them to clean their dentures daily using a denture brush or a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild soap or denture cleanser. Dentures should be soaked overnight to maintain their shape so they continue to fit comfortably. However, outside of at-home denture care, regular dental check-ups are also important to evaluate fit and address any concerns or discomfort.

While Dr. Swick does small, uncomplicated extractions (removing a tooth from the gum) in-house, he will send you to an oral surgeon he trusts if you need a larger procedure like removing a wisdom tooth or an impacted tooth (one that hasn’t come out of the gum at all or only partially).

He earned his DDS from West Virginia University School of Dentistry, and did a year-long residency in Richland Memorial Hospital. He’s a member of AGD, ADA, Greater Columbia Dental Association, American Association of Endodontists, International Association of Orthodontics, and The American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Dr. Swick also completed the year-long American Academy of Implant Dentistry comprehensive continuing education course to bring the best methodology in implant placement to his patients.
