Dental Care
Contrary to popular belief, most cats are not "finicky" eaters. Look for changes, such as a decrease or an increase in consumption and how the cat chews its food. Decreased food intake can be a sign of several disorders, ranging from poor dental health to other, more serious conditions. Illness Treatment

Pain Management
Cats do not demonstrate painful signs as readily as people do. While there appear to be differences in pain perception between cats and people, we do know that some conditions are painful in cats and that includes post-operative discomfort. The pain medication needed will depend on the type of surgery performed. Any cat that appears painful will receive additional medication. Pain medication is also frequently dispensed when your cat is discharged from the hospital. DO NOT give your cat pain medication intended for humans, as these can be toxic to your cat.

Infection Treatment

Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
A cat that is urinating inappropriately may have any number of conditions associated with the behavior, including lower urinary tract disease, kidney disease, urinary tract infection and diabetes mellitus. It can also be a sign of arthritis, which makes it difficult for the cat to get into the litter box.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Diabetes Treatment
Feline Diabetes Mellitus is a hormonal disease affecting approximately 1 in 300 adult cats. The condition can occur in any cat but is statistically more common in older, obese male cats. Diabetes mellitus can be a complex problem; however, in nearly all cases the issue is that the cat either doesn't have enough insulin or the body can't properly use the insulin it does produce.
Thyroid Disease Treatment
A decrease or increase in activity can be a sign of a medical of condition. As cats age, there is increased risk for arthritis. Discomfort from systemic illnesses can also lead to a decrease in activity. It's important to understand cats don't usually slow down just because they are old. More activity is often caused by hyperthyroidism. Changes in activity warrant a visit to The Cat Hospital.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Changes in water consumption may be more difficult to observe, especially in cats that spend time outdoors or drink from toilets and sinks. Increased water intake can be an early indicator of thyroid problems, kidney disease, diabetes or other conditions.
Cancer Treatment
Cancer therapy: Cancer can be a frightening word but many types of feline neoplasia can be successfully treated. The Cat Hospital is equipped to manage a variety of treatment options for our patients including chemotherapy, cancer surgery, and off-site radiation. We understand the importance of a thorough discussion with you concerning diagnosis, cancer treatment options and expectations prior to initiating therapy.

Dental Surgery
Dentistry: Dental procedures including oral surgery, routine cleaning and extractions are performed at The Cat Hospital. All dental procedures are performed by the doctor in the surgery suite with cardiac monitoring.

Dr. Shanker has performed tens of thousands of surgical procedures from routine to highly complicated cases. He has been a guest host on several radio and television programs to discuss feline health issues. He also served on a City of San Jose committee establishing a voucher system to provide feline sterilization procedures for people with financial need. He is a past president of the Santa Clara County Veterinary Medical Association.

Grooming
Grooming: Full bathing and grooming services are available at The Cat Hospital. The appropriate therapeutic bath will be given depending on your cat's needs. Since cats are not small dogs, some of the grooming procedures may be different from your canine pets. Many long hair cats are prone to chronic matting, thus body shaves and lion cuts can provide greater comfort. Our staff can review what is best for your cat when the cat is admitted for grooming.
