Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease that is difficult to quantify at times since what is most commonly affected is one’s peripheral vision in contrast to central vision. Peripheral vision is hard to assess, thus is it important to have scheduled regular follow-up appointments as a spectrum of exams are warranted in order to assess the disease. There are many different causes and types of glaucoma, however, it most often involves elevated intraocular pressure. Elevated eye pressure is due to a buildup of a fluid (aqueous humor) that flows throughout the inside of your eye. This internal fluid normally drains out through a tissue called the trabecular meshwork at the angle where the iris and cornea meet. When fluid is overproduced or the drainage system doesn't work properly, the fluid can't flow out at its normal rate and eye pressure increases.

Dr. Michael A. Pisacano earned his M.D. at the Chicago Medical School in 1999, where he earned the Dean’s Award. After completing a medical internship at the Yale University’s Norwalk Hospital, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Montefiore Hospital Medical Center, where he continues to be a Clinical Instructor. His research in Juvenile Diabetes has been published in the medical literature and he has presented his work at the international ophthalmology conferences sponsored by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
Macular Degeneration
Age-related Macular Degeneration: This disease is the most common form of blindness in those over 50. When found in its early stages, there are treatments available that can prevent the disease from worsening. However, early stages show no physical symptoms. The only way to detect early macular degeneration, and take the steps needed to prevent it from worsening, is to have eye examinations on a yearly basis.

After an internship in Internal Medicine, she went on to complete her medical and surgical Ophthalmology residency training at Northwell Health, where she served as a chief resident in her senior year. She completed her subspecialty training in medical and surgical glaucoma at the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.

Panretinal photocoagulation of diabetic retinopathy, iridoplasty and Laser Trabeculoplasty for glaucoma and for focal retinopexy to seal retinal holes or tears. Their Lumenis SLT laser is used for Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty for open angle glaucoma without thermal side effects. Additionally, a Zeiss YAG laser is used for capsulotomy of capsule haze following cataract surgery and peripheral iridotomy for narrow angle glaucoma.
