Ultrasound
Rotator cuff tears can be diagnosed with a medical review and thorough physical exam, and confirmed following X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ultrasound. Symptomatic relief may be obtained with conservative treatments including rest, shoulder sling, pain medications, NSAIDs, steroidal injections and shoulder exercises. However, surgery is required when these methods do not help relieve symptoms. Rotator cuff repair can be performed by a minimally invasive arthroscopically assisted mini-open technique. Surgery may involve removal of bone spurs, repairing and re-attaching torn tendons with suture anchors to the shoulder bone and sometimes transferring a functional tendon (graft) from its original location to restore function. Following the surgery you will be advised to practice motion exercises.

Your surgeon reviews your medical history and performs a physical examination of your shoulder to assess the extent of mobility and pain. Imaging tests such as X-ray or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) are ordered.

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical procedure performed for joint problems. Shoulder arthroscopy is performed using a pencil-sized instrument called an Arthroscope. The arthroscope consists of a light system and camera to project images to a computer screen for your surgeon to view the surgical site. Arthroscopy is used to treat disease conditions and injuries involving the bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles of the shoulder joint.

Single Portal Arthroscopy (SPA) is an innovative approach to standard knee arthroscopic surgery. This is a state-of-the-art minimally invasive method for treating knee joint injuries.
Hip Replacement
Dr. Grimes was among the first surgeons in California to perform the direct anterior minimally invasive surgical approach for hip replacement, a procedure that avoids cutting any muscles to access the Hip. He has over 12 years of experience performing this technique. Selected patients have been able to go home less than 24 hours after having this procedure.
Knee Replacement
There are a number of different surgical approaches to the knee joint. The most common knee incision is the “peripatellar” incision (Fig. 1, Left). This incision has the advantage of being technically easy for the surgeon and provides good exposure to the knee. A disadvantage of this approach is that it detaches one third of the quadriceps muscle. The quadriceps muscle is the big muscle on the front of your thigh and attaches to the upper part of the kneecap. Although the incision in the muscle and tendon is repaired at the end of the procedure, patients with knee replacement through this approach tend to have more pain. Muscle activity of the leg pulls on the suture line in the muscle. Detachment of the muscle also results in weakness. Patients with peripatellar incisions are much less likely to be able to lift their leg the day (straight leg raise) after surgery.
Knee Arthroscopy
Although standard knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure, reducing the two or three incisions to one results in faster recovery, less pain, and better movement in less time.

Sports Medicine
Sports injuries occur when playing indoor or outdoor sports or while exercising. Sports injuries can result from accidents, inadequate training, improper use of protective devices, or insufficient stretching or warm-up exercises. The most common sports injuries are sprains and strains, fractures, and dislocations.
Physical Therapy
Following the procedure, the elbow is set with a splint at an angle of 90 degrees. The bent position of the elbow is maintained for a few weeks. After your elbow is removed from the splint, you will start motion exercises of the elbow. If you have difficulty regaining elbow motion, you may be sent for formal physical therapy. You can resume regular activities after consulting with your doctor.
Occupational Therapy
The non-surgical treatment options include rest, medications including analgesics and antibiotics, injections, and physical/occupational therapy.
Frozen Shoulder
Treated Shoulder, impingement and frozen shoulder. Started physical therapy the following morning. Painful at first, kept going and followed up at home at least 2 hours per day. After only 8 weeks I had almost full range of motion and on my way to a full recovery. Very positive experience.
