All patients undergoing general anesthesia are required to have pre-anesthetic blood testing to screen for possible metabolic disease. All surgical patients have an intravenous catheter and are maintained on IV fluids for the length of their procedure. The anesthetic drugs chosen for our patients are the safest available. Patients undergoing invasive procedures are monitored with the latest electronic monitoring equipment. This monitoring equipment allows the doctor to have continuous information on the patient's heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, blood pressure, electrocardiograph (EKG) status, and blood oxygen saturation. This information allows the doctor to tailor each patient's anesthesia to his or her needs. We feel that advanced anesthetic monitoring equipment, though costly, is a necessity in providing the best possible patient care.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Your pets dental health is also a key component to your pets overall health.Veterinary dental care begins at the puppy and kitten life stage. AAHA recommends that veterinarians evaluate puppies and kittens for problems related to the deciduous (baby) teeth, missing or extra teeth, swellings and oral development. As your pet ages, your veterinarian will look for developmental anomalies, the accumulation of plaque and tartar, periodontal disease and oral tumors.

Veterinary Surgery
Dr. Julie Duval is our MOVES veterinary soft tissue surgery partner in the Atlanta region. She is available to perform advanced soft tissue surgeries at Veterinary Center of Buckhead. Dr. Duval received a bachelor of science degree from Duke University, then graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, where she completed a one year rotating internship. She completed her surgery residency at the University of Georgia and then accepted a position as a clinical surgery instructor at the University of Pennsylvania, where Dr. Duval was involved with the training of students, interns and residents. In 2000, she moved to Atlanta and practiced at one of the largest veterinary specialty practices in the southeast. While enjoying all aspects of soft tissue and oncologic surgery, Dr. Duval has a special interest in perineal urethrostomy, portosystemic shunts and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Julie Duval has been married to internist Derek Duval since 1990, and they have two children. She loves reading, watching college football and basketball (especially the Duke Blue Devils), hiking, traveling, and photography. She and her husband have two dogs, a sheltie named Maisie and a schipperke named Bellatrix, as well as some pets without fur.

Laboratory Services
Whenever anesthesia is needed, special considerations are taken to help ensure the safety of your pet. Your veterinarian will thoroughly examine your pet to make sure he/she is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. All animals at the Veterinary Center of Buckhead who are scheduled for surgery undergo a routine pre-anesthetic blood test to check the health of the kidneys and liver as well as to check for anemia and hydration. This test insures that your pet has the greatest chance of having a problem free surgery and quick recovery. The testing is done in-house the day of the surgery.
