Dental Examination
Effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during braces. Regular visits to the general dentist for examination and cleaning are also essential. The results of inadequate oral hygiene include decalcification (white spots/marks), gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), and periodontal disease (inflammation leading to bone loss).

Teeth Cleaning
You will notice that it is much harder to keep your teeth clean with braces. Food becomes caught in the brackets and between your teeth. Brushing after meals and flossing will help prevent plaque from forming and should become part of your daily schedule. Use a soft toothbrush and brush at a 45-degree angle to the tooth in small circles above and below the brackets. You should brush for at least two minutes after every meal.Your toothbrush will wear out faster because of your appliances, so be sure to replace it whenever the bristles start to fray.We highly recommend using an electric or ultrasonic toothbrush like a Philips Sonicare or Oral-B Triumph which make brushing extremely effective when used consistently.WaterPiks are great at removing food debris and plaque from areas that your toothbrush cannot reach.If plaque remains on the teeth for an extended length of time, it can cause decay or decalcification seen as white spots on your teeth. Please continue to see your dentist every 3 to 4 months for regular dental cleanings.

Clean your retainer several times each day. Gently scrub it with toothpaste using a denture brush or toothbrush. You can periodically soak your retainer in a glass of water with a retainer or denture cleansing tablet. Never boil your retainer or put it in hot water.

Orthognathic / Jaw Surgery Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) is recommended for adult patients and some teenagers with significant skeletal discrepancies. Jaw surgery treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, mainly severe underbites or overbites. These abnormalities cause difficulty chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. Jaw surgery is done in conjunction with full, comprehensive orthodontic treatment to improve the overall appearance of the facial profile and occlusion.
