Sleep Disorders
It is important to remember that there are risks associated with testosterone therapy and that it is a medication designed to treat a disorder. It's not a substance to enhance a lifestyle or to be taken for an energy boost. Receiving testosterone therapy is always conducted under careful medical supervision and requires ongoing monitoring of blood levels. Taking testosterone may be beneficial to many people but can also aggravate sleep disorders, stimulate enlargement of the prostate gland and trigger urinary problems. It can also cause more minor issues such as an increase in facial hair and acne.
Male Infertility
Discussing the impact of anti-depressants, The American Society for Reproductive Medicine took it one step further. At their 64th annual meeting in San Francisco during 2008, the association reported that Paxil and other SSRIs can damage sperm and contribute to male infertility. Treatment with Paxil was found to increase DNA fragmentation in sperm and caused an adverse affect on male fertility. The study concluded by reporting that men who used Paxil were found to have a five fold increase in developing abnormal sperm DNA.

It is important to remember that unless a woman wants to have a child, some form of birth control is necessary for women with SCI who are in the childbirth years. After the first few months post injury, spinal cord injury does not prevent pregnancy in any way.

Urology
Dr. Stanley Ducharme is a clinical psychologist and a diplomat in sex therapy at the Center for Sexual Medicine at Boston Medical Center. Along with a team of medical professionals, Dr. Ducharme provides clinical services to men and women who have a wide variety of sexual dysfunctions. In addition, he is a Clinical Professor of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine.
Prostate Cancer
Although studies with Stendra among men who have various physical disabilities have not yet been reported, this is only a matter of time. The medication is specifically geared toward men with these types of medical conditions. Specifically, the medication is being distributed and advertised as a solution for men with spinal cord injury, diabetes and prostate cancer.

Depression tends to be a "catch all" phrase that encompasses a variety of mood disorders and mental health conditions. It is a common condition that can affect anyone at any time. In general, it is estimated that about one in every 20 Americans experiences depression each year. It is even more common in people with spinal cord injury (SCI) where it is estimated that anywhere from 11% to 37% of people with SCI experience depression. In general, depression is two to three times more likely in people with SCI than in the non-disabled population.

A psychiatrist has attended medical school and completed a residency in psychiatry. A psychologist, on the other hand, has usually completed 4 years of graduate school and an internship in psychology. Although both are experts in emotional and behavioral issues, they approach problems from different viewpoints. The psychiatrist, being a medical doctor, often sees emotional difficulties from a physiological perspective and typically prescribes medications for problems such as depression and anxiety. The psychologist, as a behavioral scientist, understands the problem from an emotional/family background and uses approaches such as therapy, counseling or hypnosis. For certain problems, the two individuals may work together using both counseling and medications.

To the contrary, medical researchers believe that hormones or androgens such as testosterone are the critical factors behind a woman's sexual interest. They argue that certain medications such as birth control pills or anti-depressant medications interfere with the development of normal testosterone and that women with low interest have lower testosterone levels. In addition, hysterectomy, breast cancer, childbirth and menopause all contribute to the depletion of a woman's testosterone level. To treat low sexual desire, physicians currently give women low levels of testosterone. Since this is an "off label" use of these medications, they are not covered by insurance.

At the one-year mark, most people with SCI still do not feel that they have mastered their sexual adjustment. At least 50% are still dissatisfied with sex and many people decide to put sexual functioning aside. They tend to focus on other aspects of their injuries. They focus on obtaining more physical therapy, gaining more independence and learning their medical care.
