Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
EMG is a diagnostic exam that physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians use to assess the health of a patient’s muscles and nerves. To do this, fine needle electrodes are inserted into the muscle to measure the electrical communication signal between the nerves and muscles. This test will measure the electrical activity produced when the muscle contracts, which helps determine whether weakness or pain is due to muscle dysfunction (myopathy) or nerve dysfunction (neuropathy). EMG can also be used to rule out a wide variety of neuromuscular conditions, including ALS, carpal tunnel syndrome, MS and Guillain-Barre syndrome. EMG testing time can vary, but most often takes between 60 and 90 minutes.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a safe and painless test that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the body’s organs and structures. An MRI differs from a CAT scan (also called a CT scan or a computed axial tomography scan) because it doesn’t use radiation. The technology uses strong magnetic fields and radio frequency waves to produce detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues of the body. These images assist in making diagnoses of the bone, joint, muscle, tendons, ligaments and spine and can help detect tumors, bleeding, infection and other abnormalities in the body.

Dr. Butler: One of the reasons I was drawn to this specialty was the wide variety of patients and conditions that we treat. In one day, I can see athletes with plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains/strains or achilles tendinitis, people with complex flatfoot deformities, traumatic injuries and more common things like bunions, hammertoes, bunionettes and general arthritis.
