Thyroid
Other medical conditions, including thyroid disease, pregnancy, and menopause, may be associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. Furthermore, lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and repetitive motions may increase the risk of developing the condition.
To diagnose a trigger finger, a healthcare provider typically conducts a physical examination and discusses the patient’s symptoms. No laboratory tests are required for diagnosis, but radiographs may be indicated if abnormal pathology is suspected. Ultrasound can also be performed to evaluate any abnormal anatomy as well as to grade the severity and guide appropriate treatment options.
MRI
MRI scans offer a more comprehensive imaging of soft tissues than X-rays, aiding in the determination of other possible causes for symptoms and the identification of abnormal tissues that may be affecting the median nerve.
Marie began her nursing career at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Edgewood, KY working as a registered nurse in orthopedics. In 2008, Marie moved to Arizona and commenced her career in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit with Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in downtown Phoenix. Marie took care of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit recovering from heart attacks and post open heart surgery. She felt the calling to help in more ways and was trained to split her time between the Emergency Department and ICU. She graciously accepted the task of precepting nursing students, paramedic students, and training new colleagues. This transition in mindset helped her find her pathway into becoming a Clinical Education Specialist for the Emergency Department and Trauma and was nominated for the March of Dimes 2015 Nurse of the Year in the category of Education. Marie missed providing exceptional care to her patients and took a role with Dignity Health in 2016 as a night shift charge Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit. Things came full circle, and Marie made her way back to orthopedics with her new home at Fitzmaurice Hand Institute.
Wound Care
Following trigger finger surgery, the recommended post-operative care includes wound care, therapy, and a gradual return to daily activities. If sutures are used, the patient will need to return to the clinic for their removal. Hand therapy may be necessary to help relax a stiff finger and improve the range of motion.

Chemical peels are a treatment option that can address pigmentation issues and improve skin texture on your hands. They work by applying a chemical solution to the skin which causes the top superficial layers to peel away revealing a smoother and more even-toned skin underneath. Chemical peels can be beneficial for addressing sunspots, age spots, and other pigmentation issues, as well as improving skin texture.
Skin Care
Proper preparation is key to achieving the best possible results from your hand rejuvenation treatments. This includes attending a pre-treatment consultation with the Hand Surgeon and adhering to specific skin care recommendations to ensure your hands are in optimal condition for the procedure.
When experiencing hand and wrist pain or discomfort during a workout, it’s essential to listen to your body. Continuing to exercise with pain can worsen the injury and lead to further damage. If rest and proper self-care measures like ice and compression do not alleviate the pain in several days, or the discomfort is consistent even with adequate gear and form, seek medical attention. Your doctor can diagnose your symptoms and recommend a treatment plan, including physical therapy or surgery, to help you heal and prevent future injuries.
