J. Kellogg Parsons, MD, is a board-certified urologist who specializes in treating prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), bladder cancer, and kidney cancer. Dr. Parsons is an expert in cryosurgery, laser surgery, robotic surgery, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the prostate, and is internationally recognized for his work in prostate disease and urologic oncology. He has published over 130 scientific research articles, edited four medical textbooks, and received research grants from the NIH/National Cancer Institute (NCI), NIH/National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and Department of Defense. Dr. Parsons currently serves as a consulting editor for European Urology and European Urology Focus, and is associate editor for Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases.Dr. Parsons has repeatedly been named a top doctor in San Diego Magazines Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society. He has also been recognized as one of Americas Best Doctors. Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Parsons trained to perform nerve-sparing prostate cancer surgery with Dr. Patrick C. Walsh, one of the nations leading urologic surgeons, at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Parsons completed his residency and fellowship training at John Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. He earned his medical degree from University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine in Philadelphia and holds a Master of Health Science in clinical investigation from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Dr. Parsons is board certified in urology and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).Dr. Parsons has won numerous awards for his scientific research, lectures extensively across the U.S. and in Europe and Asia, and serves on the American Urological Association Western Section Board of Directors. He is also the Chair of the Genitourinary Surgery Committee of the NCI Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and the Vice Chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Expert Panel on Clinical Guidelines for the Early Detection of Prostate Cancer.
