Ultrasound
Head Ultrasound: A head ultrasound uses sound waves to obtain images of the brain. Babies still have areas of the skull that have not completely closed referred to as the soft spot. Using the soft spot as a window to the brain an ultrasound machine sends out sound waves which can be recorded on a computer. The images can show our surgeons the fluid spaces and some basic anatomy of the brain. For babies it is a quick test with the only discomfort being a small amount of cold gel placed on the soft spot. A head ultrasound may not always provide the detailed anatomy required to make a surgical plan, but it is good tool to get a better understanding of the fluid spaces and follow changes that may occur.
MRI
An MRI is the best way to visualize the spinal cord and diagnose a tethered cord. If your child recently had an MRI, it is helpful to bring that report and a disc of the imaging to your visit, so your Neurosurgeon can review the MRI and discuss the findings with you. If your child is having symptoms and an MRI confirms a tethered cord, surgery may be discussed at this visit as well.
Radiology
Skull x-rays are the first screening tool if craniosynostosis is suspected. Much like an x-ray can identify a fracture in a bone elsewhere in your body, it is a good screening tool to identify if bones of the skull have prematurely fused. If you or your Pediatrician suspect craniosynostosis and x-rays have been completed please bring both the radiology report and the imaging on a disc to your appointment. If x-rays have not been completed you will first meet with one of Neurosurgeons and measurements of the child’s head will be performed. Next, the x-rays will be obtained. Children generally tolerate this very well since nothing touches them and caregivers can stay in the room with their child, wearing protective gear, while the x-rays are obtained. Following the x-rays our Neurosurgeons will review the pictures and discuss ideal treatment options.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
Head computed tomography (often referred to as a head CT): This technology uses a thin x-ray beam that rotates around the head and provides detailed pictures of the brain and fluid spaces. There is a small amount of radiation associated with a head CT but at Children’s Hospital of Michigan our new CT scanner provides detailed pictures with very low dose radiation to help protect our young patients. A CT scan is minimally invasive as nothing touches the child and can be obtained in just a few minutes. Some age groups may find the equipment a bit intimidating.
Chemotherapy
Treatments can include medications, surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. Outlook is good especially when treated early. Careful follow-up care is essential.
